Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: Externships

Case School of Dental Medicine Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and University Hospitals of Cleveland offers 1-4 week externships to third and fourth year dental students for those interested in this field. The extern will be an integral part of the team and will be involved with outpatient services in the OMFS clinic at the dental school, observation in major surgeries in the operating room, didactic conferences through out the week, and on call duties along with a resident in the trauma/emergency room setting. Applicants should contact the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department well in advance to reserve a position since availability during holiday and summer times may be limited.

Our program appreciates the importance of not only investigating potential programs, but also of gaining pre-doctoral experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  Therefore, we encourage dental students to join our extern program.  Generally, externs spend a minimum of two weeks and, ideally, four weeks in the program.  Students should be seriously interested in a career in this field.

The student will be expected to function as a part of the team at the sub-intern level, being supervised by faculty and residents.  Externs gain experience in the following areas:
  1. Outpatient clinic (e.g. dentoalveolar, implants)
  2. Operating room procedures
  3. Emergency call (e.g. trauma)
  4. Conference
  5. Inpatient rounding (e.g. history and physical taking, note writing)
Because summer months are most-requested, it is advised the student apply well-ahead of the anticipated visit.  Generally, no more than two externs at any given time are allowed.  For information or to apply for an externship, please call 216-368-2538.
