Fellowship in Orthodontics
The program provides for up to 12 months of training in clinical and didactic orthodontics. Although conducted in conjunction with the Orthodontic Training program, it is a non-accredited fellowship. The program is sponsored by the Department of Orthodontics and is directed by the International Program Director. The Orthodontic Fellowship is considered a full time program of study due to the combination of didactic and clinical practical hours. This program is not eligible for financial aid.
Objectives
The goal of this fellowship is to provide clinical and didactic training in all phases of orthodontics, beyond the scope of undergraduate dental education. Among the areas of emphasis will be the use of cone beam computed tomography images for diagnosis and treatment planning, wire bending and biomechanics, cephalometric tracing and analysis as well as facial growth and development.
Requirements for Admission
Candidates must have a DDS degree or its equivalent and at least one year of post graduate training in orthodontics. Foreign graduates are encouraged to apply. An application must be received with a $75 non-refundable application fee no later than December 15th for the program starting the following July 1st. Official transcripts from all colleges, universities and dental schools attended including GPA and class rank, and three letters of recommendation must be submitted.
Priority for admission will be given to individuals who have identified a mentor who is a graduate of an ADA accredited orthodontic training program.
Applicants selected for the program will register as full time fellows. The program's fee as of July 2007 is $18,036 per year of registration.
Program Overview
Candidates selected are eligible to enroll in didactic course work assigned to orthodontic residents. However, each Fellow will design their course of study in consultation with the International Program Director.
The clinical component consists of a laboratory part and patient care part. The patient care part will commence only after the International Program Director has determined that the clinical skills performed on the laboratory typodont have been satisfactorily completed. The patient care part consists of care of patients the International Program Director deems appropriate for the fellow in training. This includes but is not limited to placing and removing orthodontic appliances and wires; diagnosis and treatment planning; dental impressions for fabrication of appliances and for diagnosis and treatment planning.
The fellow’s progress will be evaluated quarterly by the International Program Director. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the fellow will receive a certificate of completion of a “Fellowship in Orthodontics.”
